Niche Productions Presents Scuba (Hot Flush Recordings)

Friday 23 July – The Civic
Supports: Mark Pritchard, Simon Caldwell, Jonny Faith and Monk Fly

Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, curator of Hotflush Recordings, one of the original dubstep labels which released some of the most important tracks of the genre’s formative period and continues to be a source of constant originality to date. In 2009, Hotflush was responsible for releasing Resident Advisor's Number 1 track of the year, 'Hyph Mngo' by Joy Orbison.

In 2010, Scuba looks to reach the same lofty heights as Orbison, not only with his own album 'Triangulation' (spearheaded by the phenomenal 'You Got Me') but with his label's continued efforts to unearth the most futuristic dancefloor-friendly music, including efforts by Ramadanman, Mount Kimbie, Untold and many more.

Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, a move which (according to some) influenced his critically acclaimed debut album, ‘A Mutual Antipathy’ (2008). The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking dubstep producers. More recently he has been busy remixing artists including Fever Ray and Red Snapper, releasing fresh material including the highly-acclaimed ‘Aesaunic’ EP on Hotflush and ‘Speak/Negative’ on Naked Lunch.

Comfortably sitting alongside producers like Martyn, Actress, Flying Lotus, Joker, James Blake, Kyle Hall, Floating Points and the rest of the future-beat alumni, Scuba’s sound straddles Dubstep, wonky beats and deep house and techno. Backed up by Mark Pritchard, Simon Caldwell and Jonny Faith & Monk Fly, this night is set to be a feast for the ears, as much for the bass-heads as it is for fans of pioneering electronica.

In a Hip-Hop world of free mixtapes, the album format seems to be dying. Recent ‘mixtapes’ (they’re rarely mixed) like the excellent Danny Brown’s XXX on Fools Gold...
