ALICE RUSSELL
Music that tugs at the emotions and raises hairs on the back of the neck. You really can’t fake what Miss Russell’s got!
Alice Russell has gained an enviable reputation as one of the hottest singers in the UK right now. Having completed sellout Australian tours in the past with Quantic and The Bamboos this is the first time Alice will be treating Australian audiences to her full solo show direct from the UK and backed up by her own 6 piece band.
Alice’s lavishly soulful voice is both timeless and up to the minute modern. With self-assurance and sass, her live performances captivate the audience and command its attention with her trademark bluesy, soul lament that encompasses everything from funk to gospel to jazz and beyond.
a 2006 saw the release of Under the Munka Moon II, the follow-up to her two previous albums, My Favourite Letters and Under the Munka Moon. A collection of collaborations, remixes and alternate takes, the new album also features some tasty collaboration’s with Nostalgia 77, DJ Vadim, Bonobo and Bugz in the Attic.
UK deep funk legend Keb Darge will also be spinning on the night, serving up his unique blend of rare funk and soul. Keb was one of the pioneers of the early scene with his days of collecting vinyl and 45s beginning in the 70s. Initially championing the sounds of Northern Soul, he later coined the phrase ‘Deep Funk’ for the style of records he played.
Keb now runs Kay-Dee records with producer and fellow funk aficionado Kenny Dope. His legendary London club night “Deep Funk” still runs every Friday night. With early BBE compilation series to his credit including the ‘Funk Spectrum’ and ‘Keb Darge’s Legendary Deep Funk’ series, his reputation as one of the finest selectors of the genre is rock solid.
Add to that a DJ Set from Alice’s Tru Thoughts label mate and production wiz TM Juke and you start to see how big this show will be! Get ready for one of the heaviest funk soul nights we’ll see for years to come. . . .
