BOOKER T JONES
Niche Productions is ecstatic to present Booker T. Jones – live and direct from Memphis, Tennessee. From legendary Soul-Funk staples like ‘Green Onions’, ‘Time Is Tight’ and ‘Melting Pot’ to producing for Bill Withers and Willie Nelson, the multi instrumentalist and producer has most recently teamed up with ?uestlove and The Roots for his new album The Road From Memphis and now he is bringing his explosive show down under with his razor sharp band.
Booker T. Jones has come a long way from listening to Phineas Newborn practice playing piano whilst on his paper route as a pre adolescent. Leaving Stax Records when ‘Green Onions’ was a massive hit, the high-schooler chose a different path, leaving Memphis and the MGs for the University of Indiana to study classical music from around the world.
For more than 15 years at Stax, he explored the potential of soul and R&B with the MG’s, both on their own albums and behind vocalists. They were pushing a new direction on their final Stax wax, Melting Pot, grabbing a groove and riding it longer than any pop song, to see where it would go. In a sense, where it went is the current album, forty years later: The Road From Memphis, which was recorded with the legendary Philadelphian Hip-Hop band The Roots and engineer Gabriel Roth of The Dap Kings fame. Also featured on the recording were Dennis Coffey, Sharon Jones, Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket), Matt Berninger (The National) and Lou Reed.
Booker T. Jones’ career is punctuated with the sort of highlights that read like an encyclopaedia of popular music. He co-wrote hits for Eddie Floyd and Otis Redding as well as the Blues burner ‘Born Under a Bad Sign’ made popular by Cream. Recently he has recorded with Elton John, Neil Young, Drive By Truckers, and Rancid, and won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2007 and was inducted in to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
With a different show performed every night expect a wonderful mix of MG hits, Stax music, newly recorded music from Booker's latest two solo albums, and even some brand new, unrecorded music from the legendary artist! Do not miss Booker T. Jones as he returns to Australia with his dynamite band, searing across the country with his trademark Hammond B-3, playing across his 50 year catalogue of classic Soul hits!
