Niche Productions presents four huge characters of modern music on one stage, in one city for one night only: Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, DâM-Funk and Gaslamp Killer, at the Forum, Friday 7 January 2011.
Representing freeform Jazz and classical is Flying Lotus aka Steve Ellison who created one of 2010’s masterpieces in ‘Cosmogramma’. Featuring guests like Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and cousin Ravi Coltrane, Flying Lotus left dust in the biter’s eyes, flipping the beat genre on its arse and leaving many guessing where he could go next. After blowing heads and speakers with his shows in January 2009, it’s time for the artist to return to Australia at a pinnacle moment of his career.
Scotland’s Hudson Mohawke is a little less easy to characterise, though many have tried by using comparisons as disparate as Timbaland, Aphex Twin, Prince and Legend Of Zelda. Like label-mate Flying Lotus, his ability to hop through tempos and dynamics from ambient to menacing is often copied but never equalled. Catch him now before you hear all of his productions underneath some of pop music’s biggest stars in 2011.
King of the Boogie, DâM-Funk, is a virtuoso in his own right, generously sharing his insights on modern funk and holding a new generation of Disco fan’s hands through the biggest records of yesteryear. His sold-out tour of Australia in May this year warranted an immediate return; filling up venues playing almost exclusively his own material in an impressive decks-vocals-and-keytar extravaganza. Not one to rest on his laurels, whilst recording a follow up to ‘Toeachizown’ he’s also collaborating with Nite Jewel and getting his early 90s teenage recordings from home reissued in ‘Adolescent Funk’ (out late October on Stones Throw).
Probably known better on stage as ‘The motherfucking Gaslamp Killer’, GLK wins audiences over around the globe by guiding listeners through 60s pyschedelia, eastern prog, naughties wobbly-bassed beats and west coast hip-hop plus the most devastating dubstep records known to man. How he makes it work is this man’s secret and his presentation on stage needs to be seen and heard to be believed. Look out for a range of recordings from the emerging producer, too, from his collaborations
with Gonjasufi to his new solo EP Death Gate.
With a piqued interest across the board for these four artists, this one is bound to sell out well in advance. The world is looking to these four artists for where music is headed and for one night only, Sydney will get to see and hear four exceptional takes on just what that might be.
