HORACE ANDY (Massive Attack) & DUB ASANTE (Jamaica/UK)

Tuesday 15th March, 2011 – Prince of Wales, Melbourne

“Legendary roots reggae” The Independent 2010
“The dignified elder statesman of reggae.“ The Guardian 2009

One of Jamaica’s most distinguished reggae icons, Horace Andy, returns to Australia in March 2011 for shows in Sydney and Melbourne. Best known for his distinctive mellifluous vocals, Horace Andy has established himself as one of reggae’s most enduring statesmen, in a career spanning almost 4 decades.

Since his first recordings as a teenager on Coxsone Dodd’s groundbreaking label Studio One, Andy’s powerful and politically conscious music and classic Rastafarian message continues to find new audiences with every generation of music fans. Fame came early with the smash hit Skylarking, marking the beginning of his wildly successful collaborations with producer Bunny Lee through the 70’s. The recordings from this era remain crucial listening, and have become classics alongside the music of Andy’s contemporaries Bob Marley, Burning Spear and Sugar Minott. Constantly pushing on the boundaries of reggae music, Andy relocated to the US and released Pure Ranking in 1978, an album that foreshadowed the rise of raggamuffin and laid the groundwork for the modern dancehall sound. Throughout the 80’s he joined other reggae luminaries including Prince Jammy, Bim Sherman (Raggamuffin, Run Babylon and Revolution), and Lloyd Barnes (Dance Hall Style) blazing a trail of new innovations in the genre.

A move to the UK in 1990 pushed him once again into the spotlight when he was invited to lay down some experimental vocals for music pioneers Massive Attack on their first release Blue Lines. The collaboration helped to forge the emerging genre of trip-hop, and introduced Andy to a whole new generation of followers. Most notably through the moody track Angel on Massive Attack’s third album Mezzanine, Andy’s inimitable vocals garnered phenomenal international success, including synchronisation on the Brad Pitt film Snatch. The track has most recently been covered by Tame Impala. The creative relationship between Andy and Massive Attack has continued through five albums, including the 2010 release Heligoland, which they toured earlier this year, playing the Sydney Opera House forecourt in March.

In the mid-90’s Andy recorded with dub doctor Mad Professor, releasing the albums Life Is For Living and Roots and Branches, and towards the end of the millennium Living in the Flood (1999) and Mek it Bun (2002) on Massive Attack’s Melankolic label, amongst others. He also featured on the world music project One Giant Leap and the Easy Star All-Stars album Radiodread in 2006. In 2009 he was invited to participate in the Strut Label series Inspiration Information resulting in the release Horace Andy and Ashley Beedle. The album showcases Andy’s emotionally charged voice and his deep Rastafarian values, and has won a four star review from the BBC. His latest album is Serious Times, released in July 2010 on the Minor 7/Flat 5 label.

Horace Andy’s live performance is essential for music fans who want to experience the power of one of reggae music’s living legends. A show not to be missed, for one night only in Sydney and Melbourne.

Tickets on sale Thursday 2nd December.
