Laneous & The Family Yah - Canberra

Laneous & The Family Yah

November 2011
Pot Belly Hotel, Belconnen

Hot off the back of their recent BIGSOUND performance, Brisbane 4 piece Laneous & The Family Yah’s SCISSORS EP has been added to over 100 stations across the American College Radio Network, featuring in numerous Top 30 Charts and receiving plays on some of its biggest stations including KCRW in LA and WNYU in New York.

The bands aforementioned Bigsound performance earlier this month caused quite a stir, partly due to it being the debut of their new 4-piece line up. With a mandate of 'more with less' , the 4 piece exposes the freakishly talented multi-instrumentalist in James Lane (Laneous) that has for so long been reserved for the studio. Further, it sees the Family Yah ‘tech up’ - adding Synthesizer, MPC, vocal looping/fx and a space station worth of guitar effects to their existing on stage set up. All whilst shrinking numbers to a hatchback sized touring party.

Like musical idols TV on The Radio, Battles and Little Dragon, the new lineup sees the Laneous sound embrace the electronic - growing in sonic layers by marrying their garage intensity and at times ferocious live playing with moments of complete live electro jams.

Live @ Big Sound with the new line up, the reception across the board was magnanimous. For reviewers, the proof was firmly in the pudding:

“The entire spectrum of this band's discography gets a run, with emotions soaring before coming back to earth as the entire room jumps and grooves from one musical influence to the next. They’re a joy to watch, with musicians oozing cool that clearly know how to win over a crowd” – 4ZZZ

“I’d heard many good things about Laneous & The Family Yah, so I stuck around the Zoo to catch his hip-hop/funk/ball-shit-crazy-love-stuffs. They didn’t disappoint, smashing out a top notch set. Given their recent lineup reshuffle, it’s great to see them performing with such aplomb.” - Spitpress

“Back at The Zoo, West End's favourite sons Laneous & The Family Yah do what they do best – make people dance. Trimmed down to a four-piece these days, the Brisbane partystarters appear to have undergone a musical change as well: gone are the soaring, Hendrix-y guitar solos, with the focus predominantly shifted towards keyboards and thwacking dance-rock rhythms. Ever the assured frontman, Mr Laneous (sporting a new pink 'do) is playing a lot more guitar than he normally used to. Overall effect: 'Gurge-ous” – AAA Backstage

“Laneous and the Family Yah using the extra room available to them as a four-piece to their advantage. They debuted a handful of new songs that only proved their status as Brisbane’s, if not Australia’s most versatile new act. If there’s a genre they can’t dip their musical toes in, I’d still like to see them try. Laneous and the Family Death Metal does have a ring to it.” – Mood Of Monk

“Depending who you talk to, they can be described as funk, soul, rap, hip hop, indie, dub, rock, electro; whatever they truly identify as, the result is totally. Fucking. Awesome. Having culled the members of the band back to four, where there used to be a cohort of back up singers and various instrumentalists, the songs are slightly harder and edgier, sounding like the early days of Regurgitator and throwing in some dub loops for good measure...Laneous And The Family Yah produced music that really can only be defined as sexy and awesome. Sexyawesome.” – The Au Review

Still flying high off the back of Oh She, the lead track taken from their current Scissors EP, L&TFY have announced that they will be taking the new look outfit on the road, so come check out the new machine for yourself.
