Niche Productions is proud to present two of the most talked about Afrobeat outfits in Australia, Melbourne’s powerhouse the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra and Sydney’s own The Strides playing an electrifying double bill at the Basement on Friday 28 May.

Releasing their debut album ‘Do Anything Go Anywhere’ last month, the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra are Melbourne’s original Afrobeat Heavyweights, spicing it up with sizzling funk, hip hop and groovy roots in a 20 strong live line up.

The Orchestra lineup includes African expats, local hip hop and funk merchants and the cream of the Melbourne jazz scene and create a modern melting pot of sound with obvious roots in the Afrobeat movement of the 60s and 70s.

‘Do Anything Go Anywhere’ delivers irresistible loose-limbed, exotic jams which resonate with ferocious grooves, conscious hip hop and gutsy soul not to mention smoking hot vocals, heavy duty horns and gritty guitar grooves, all snaking out on top of the infectious polyrhythms of the percussion section.

Sydney locals The Strides have been making waves around the country with their fresh Afrobeat-reggae sound and a “whole lot of soul.” With recent performances at The Bellingen Global Carnival, The Peats Ridge Festival, as well as supporting Afrobeat legend Tony Allen, the Strides are quickly becoming the talk around town.

The Strides bring together some of Sydney's best new talent in afro-funk, reggae and hip-hop, spurring a new wave of Sydney interest in the hypnotic grooves of afrobeat. They have been compared to Fat Freddy's Drop and The Cat Empire, yet have something of their own in grooves that will transport you to another place.

Having now expanded to a 10-piece band featuring a heavy rhythm section and a powerful 3-piece horn section, they forge a form of high energy dance music, as well a laid back dub experience.

Don’t miss the hottest Aussie Afrobeat acts on the stage together for the first time in what is sure to be a show like nothing the Basement has ever seen.
