Numbers, the Glasgow based club night and label who brought us one of the singles of the year in Jamie xx’s Far Nearer have flipped the script completely and reissued the 1987 Acid House banger Mystery Girl by DJ Pierre’s Pfantasy Club, alongside a tasteful reworking by Seiji. I was way too young to be clubbing when this one came out but it’s interesting to hear how both clubland and popular music adopted such a hungry approach to exploring synthesisers and drum machines at this fruitful time. Full of camp, sliced vocals, belting synthesised orchestral stabs, synth bass and cranking 808 drum patterns, this slice of nostalgia should remind clubbers that some of the new music they love so much isn’t really that new at all.
