Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls (Ubiquity)

I’ve always suspected that the infamous Ubiquity figure Clutchy Hopkins was the Beastie Boys’ Money Mark, and now that he’s collaborated with Tommy Guerero and Shawn Lee to create Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls, I’m almost sure of it. The trio’s self titled album is, as you’d expect, a mixture of lounge-exotica, coastal blues, pysch-fuzz and slightly darker jazz leanings, although every track usually ends up in a happy place. It’s a familiar place you’ll travel to if you’re familiar with records like Mark’s Keyboard Repair, though the record is much more high fidelity and full sounding, skipping the snippets and skits to give you thirteen really blessed out stoner rock tracks. Highly recommended.
