Mr Chop - For Pete's Sake (5 Day Weekend)
UK-US producer Mark Ronson sure did spark a big debate with his covers album Version a few years back. On one side of the debate, it could be argued he did a good thing by getting funk and soul music back in to Woolworths and by another side of the coin, it could be argued he’s talentless for taking already good songs, getting really great people to perform them and then putting his own name on it. Regardless, it seemed he flogged the you know what out of a dead horse in regards to funky covers. Not so, it would seem as producer Mr Chop has just dropped a tribute to Pete Rock in For Pete’s Sake, which contains (very) loose instrumental interpretations of the great Hip Hop producer’s beats and rhythms. Some sounds completely different but it’s sure to raise a twinkle in the eye of the ageing b-boy. News just to hand is that CL Smooth has recorded a couple of vocal versions for TROY and Straighten It Out for a couple of limited 7”s they’re going to do, which should add a little more slap to the package for those of you who approach this sort of thing with trepidation.
