Ocote Soul Sounds & Adrian Quesado - Coconut Rock (ESL)

Ocote Soul Sounds should be vaguely familiar for the odd Freestyle 7” and remix 12” on Thievery Corp’s ESL label, but with this new album Coconut Rock (with Adrian Quesada in tow), they look set to show themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the sort of Psychedelic Afro Latin Funk Soul Jazz scene the world has finally discovered thanks to cats like Mulatu Astatke et al. The album has a few of the sort of Bebel Gilberto lounge type moments but they’re kept to a bare minimum and are actually quite helpful in balancing out the jammy, slow percussive bits. Needless to say though, I love this album and fans of the Karl Hector and The Malcouns album need to run, not walk, to get at this.
