You can always trust Cologne’s Melting Pot Music for a good fix of funk, soul or that old boom bap. They are one of those labels where you can always buy ‘em sound-unheard and be confident you’ll have something in your kit for the whole season. Even though I am bombarded with beat tape type releases every week, I try to give them all the same type of attention, even the ones that come with accompanying press-grabs like ‘post-Dilla’ and ‘Dilla-esque’ which, quite frankly makes me want to puke when I read them, now. Appearing as somewhat of a collaboration, the Puzzles compilation pairs sixteen beatmakers who fuse equal amounts of synth action with samples, so there’s something for schools both old and new. Highlights come from the ever reliable DJ Adlib, Hubert Daviz and Kan Kick but there’s many a standout moment to be revealed here. Vinyl only, no CD, no digital. Get down on it.
